Daniel F. Kissane Memorial Scholarship
Financial assistance is available for a library school student to attend the annual SUNY Librarians Association (SUNYLA) conference at the Fashion Institute of Technology, from June 6 – 8, 2012. The purpose of the Scholarship is to offer an introduction to academic librarianship, provide professional growth opportunities and encourage involvement with SUNYLA.
The Scholarship is a voucher covering:
- Travel (maximum $ 350) and lodging costs
- Registration fees
- Conference meals
You qualify if:
- You are currently enrolled in a New York State ALA-accredited MLS program or its equivalent.
For 2012:
To apply: Please write an essay of no more than 800 words on the following topic:
Combining what you have learned in your library classes with your experiences as a student using an academic library, please write about a major challenge currently facing libraries and your ideas about meeting that challenge. Don’t be afraid to get creative!
Suggested topics: Changing/adding services, utilizing technology, social media, the physical environment, role of librarians, funding, etc.
The essay will be judged on the following criteria:
- Originality and creativity
- Uniqueness of perspective in answering the question
- Degree to which the question was answered (all aspects addressed)
- Strength of support for the hypothesis or ideas presented (did they make a good case?)
- Overall essay quality (grammar, punctuation, etc.)

The Daniel F. Kissane Scholarship Committee will review the essays and notify the recipient by May 7, 2012.

Dan Kissane (May 23, 1963-November 19, 2004) was a Reference and Instruction Librarian at SUNY Oneonta’s Milne Library. He was an active and valued member of SUNYLA as well as other associations including the American Library Association.
